DEATH STATISTICS II/2025
Deaths rose by 0.1% in the second quarter of 2025 in the Basque Country
The increase occurred in June, with 0.5% more deaths, whereas in April and May there was a decrease of 0.1% and 0.2%, respectively
In the second quarter of 2025 the number of deaths in the Basque Country stood at 5,377, up 0.1% on the same period of the previous year, according to Eustat data. If we compare this data with previous years, we see that in the second quarter of 2025, the number of deaths was lower than in 2022 (5,787), 2021 (5,418) and 2020 (6,073), but higher than in 2019 (5,067), 2023 (5,266) and the average for the 2010-2019 period (4,876).
Deaths increased in Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa: there were 2,884 deaths in Bizkaia (+0.6%) and 1,741 in Gipuzkoa (+0.5%) In Álava, with 752 deaths, they were down 2.7%. By sex, 2,706 women died (-0.9%) and 2,671 men (+1.1%).
Amongst the deaths that occurred in this second quarter, 11 corresponded to children under 1 year of age (0.2%) and 122 to centenarians (2.3%).
The main causes of death were tumours and diseases of the circulatory system
The main causes of death were tumours and diseases of the circulatory system, which caused the deaths of 1,513 and 1,288 individuals respectively, which means that together they accounted for 52.1% of deaths. Diseases of the respiratory system were the third cause of death, resulting in 455 deaths.

The cause of death continued to vary according to sex. Among men, tumours (32.4%) caused more deaths than diseases of the circulatory system(22.6%), whilst among women the main cause of death was diseases of the circulatory system (25.3%) followed by tumours in second place(23.9%).
COVID-19 caused a total of 20 deaths (all from confirmed COVID-19), which represented 0.4% of the total and a decrease of 68.8%. 10 of these deaths occurred in Bizkaia, 8 in Gipuzkoa and 2 in Álava. This was the cause of death for a total of 10 women and 10 mean and the affected age groups were those aged over 80 (16), followed by those aged 60-79 (4).

Population growth was negative in all three provinces
Population growth in the Basque Country was negative in the second quarter of 2025, as there were 2,091 more deaths than births. There were negative balances in all three provinces: in Bizkaia this was 1,247 people, in Gipuzkoa 605, and in Álava 239.
